The state of Hawaii is investigating the current loot box gambling fiasco

Belgium wants no part of this new loot box craze in video games. The answer as you might have predicted is not that simple.

Lastly, Belgium's Gaming Commission announced last week that it was launching an investigation as to whether loot boxes constituted as gambling, and according to VTM News, the answer is yes (via PC Gamer).

The politicians noted they are not alone and are working with legislators in other states. Gambling in video games is also more insidious. You can complain all you want about loot boxes and microtransactions, but if you buy those games (and make in-game purchases), developers and publishers will keep utilizing them. It appears a Belgian Justice Minister spoke ahead of the ruling stating that he wished to see loot boxes banned altogether in the EU. In the United States, for example, it hinges upon the idea that "something of value" is at stake in the process. The biggest twist happens too early, and the campaign isn't long enough to convey a real sense of journey.

They also have rarity now, from Common to Epic, and tie into your game progression. The DCMS concluded that "prizes are restricted for use solely within the game, such in-game features would not be licensable gambling". The problem isn't unfairness; it's gambling. You're not guaranteed how many items you'll get in a crate, what rarity they'll be, or what classes they'll even be for. "For parents, we can't protect our children from everything". However, considering the growing controversy surrounding loot boxes in games, it's possible the organization could change its mind.

You are not alone in finding this confusing. Both Overwatch and Star Wars Battlefront II have a PEGI rating of 12. "Sorry we didn't get this right", Gabrielson wrote. Pitaro reportedly told EA bosses that Disney executives were disappointed at how negative fan reaction on the microtransactions "reflected on their marquee property".

The past few weeks there has been an uproar regarding Star Wars Battlefront II loot crates and microtransactions.
